Many believe the expression to ‘earn your stripes’ comes from the military, but it in fact comes from the Butchers’ Guild, an organisation with roots dating back to 10th century England!
Wearing a navy-blue apron with white stripes was compulsory if you were a member. Apprentices wore navy aprons with pinstripes and earned the thicker strips when qualified.
